Republic Polytechnic Student’s Final Year Project on Peranakan Kueh – A Special Interview
Introduction: A Story Worth Sharing
Kueharmony has been on a remarkable journey, preserving and perfecting the art of Peranakan Nonya Kueh for over seven years using passed down recipes. This dedication recently caught the attention of a group of Design & Media students from Republic Polytechnic, who were working on their final year project on Peranakan heritage and Nonya Kueh.
Their interest led to an interview with Kueharmony, where we shared our passion, challenges, and dreams of bringing more awareness in this beloved tradition. This post takes you through the highlights of our interview and the exciting journey behind our Peranakan kueh business.
The Beginning: How Kueharmony Started
Also known as Mummiesrella Nonya Kueh, the journey of Kueharmony began with a simple goal in mind—to create authentic Nonya Kueh that stays true to its heritage to share with all kueh lovers! For more than seven years, I worked diligently in perfecting recipes and ensuring that each kueh reflected the traditional flavors of the Peranakan culture.
2024 marked a turning point for me and my husband. We decided to expand our reach, share our story, and introduce more people to the legacy of Kueharmony. That’s when the Republic Polytechnic students approached us for their final year project interview. Without hesitation, we agreed, knowing it was a great opportunity to share our passion.
The Interview: A First-Time Experience Under the Spotlight
📅 November 2024 – The students first reached out, expressing their interest in learning about our journey.
📅 December 2024 – A deeper, in-depth phone interview took place, where they asked about our challenges and struggles, growth, and aspirations for the future.
📅 January 2025 – The actual filming began! The students arrived with professional video equipment, lights, and cameras, transforming our humble workspace into a full-fledged production set.
🎥 Challenges of Being on Camera
We were extremely nervous—after all, this was our first on-camera interview! The bright lights, multiple retakes, and impromptu questions were definitely a new experience. One of the challenges? No script! We had to be our natural selves, which led to quite a few bloopers and laughs.

👦 Children Stealing the Show!
Surprisingly, the most natural performers were our children! They effortlessly played their roles without hesitation, making the process smoother. Unlike us adults, they didn’t need multiple retakes—just pure, unfiltered joy.
The Story Behind Kueharmony: Family, Hard Work & Passion
Many people don’t realize that Kueharmony started as a one-woman effort. Over time, it became a family business. Due to my autoimmune (Thyroid) health challenges and changing circumstances, my husband decided to take some time off away the corporate world and join me in perfecting & improving the kueh-making process.
This shift transformed Kueharmony into a more efficient, family-driven business while still keeping the heart and soul of Nonya Kueh alive.
One of our signature kuehs featured in the interview was the Pandan Custard Cassava Kueh, a delicious, traditional Peranakan sweet treat.

Different Eras, Different Challenges: Reflections from the Interview
One of the most eye-opening moments of the interview was discussing how challenges change across generations.
🔹 Students today have more technology & resources, which can assist in research, brainstorming, and project execution.
🔹 Back in our day, information was scarce—slow internet, limited resources, and fewer opportunities to network.
🔹 Yet, both generations face challenges—whether it’s finding internships, dealing with academic stress, or career uncertainties during these period of times.
This conversation made us realize that while technology has made some things easier, hard work, perseverance, and adaptability remain key to success—regardless of the era.
Final Thoughts: Words of Encouragement from Kueharmony
As mentioned in the interview’s closing message for the students:
“Be perseverant, don’t let negative feedback discourage you. Take criticism as a way to grow, improve, and do better. Life is a journey—live it to the fullest and take each day as a chance to be better.”
This interview experience has been both humbling and exciting. It reminded us why we started Kueharmony in the first place—to keep the heritage of Nonya Kueh alive while creating something meaningful for our family and all Kueh Lovers.
